"Montefiore-Einstein gives a compassionate face to highly complex heart
surgery. Just because your procedure is difficult to understand does not
mean that the hospital environment or the staff are remote or impenetrable.
The medical professionals behind your procedures are human beings-they're
sensitive, they're caring, and they're understanding."
Robert E. Michler, MD
Surgeon-in-Chief
Samuel I. Belkin Chair

Co-Director, Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center
At the Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center, we know our patients are eager
to return to the lives their illnesses forced them to put on hold. Every
day, we dedicate ourselves to helping them achieve that goal. At the Montefiore-Einstein
Heart Center, a heart patient is a person first – not just a diagnosis
in need of treatment.
Because we know our patients trust us with the hearts they love best,
we include them in regular, open discussions about their conditions, treatment
options, and procedure details. We listen to our patients' concerns and
encourage them to ask for clarification – at the Montefiore-Einstein Heart
Center there is no question too small. Appointments are made in a timely
manner and doctors are always accessible to help patients navigate every
leg of their journey.
Leaders in minimally invasive care
Because the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Montefiore-Einstein
Heart Center are committed to restoring patients to active lives quickly,
we take pride in our position as a national leader in minimally invasive
care; such care uses small incisions to reduce pain and foster rapid recovery
time. In fact, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Chairman Robert E.
Michler, MD was among the first surgeons in the United States to perform
minimally invasive and robotic heart surgery.
In addition, Dr. Joe Derose, an internationally renowned surgeon, joined
this team as Director of Miniamlly Invasive and Robotic Heart Surgery.
Because of their commitment to minimally invasive surgery, at the Montefiore-Einstein
Heart Center many complex heart surgeries can often be accomplished with
smaller incisions.
Montefiore has unparalleled expertise in the following procedures:
Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
Valve repair surgery
Adult congenital heart surgery
Pediatric heart surgery
Aneurysm surgery

medicine. Keenly aware that the latest medical developments are made during
clinical trials, the Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center is at the frontlines
of cutting edge technology. Currently the Department of Cardiothoracic
Surgery is conducting clinical trials in:
Mechanical heart devices
Ventricular reconstruction to reshape the failing heart
The use of stem cells to rejuvenate heart muscle
Drugs to treat Pulmonary Hypertension
Valve sparing aortic surgery
Marfan disease
