The schedule is primarily arranged using 12-hour overnight shifts. Responsibilities include taking histories, performing physical exams, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and x-rays, and treating common inpatient conditions. Additional roles may include performing admission evaluations and cross-coverage of patients admitted to the Medical Service. PAs may also be trained in the evaluation and triage of patients admitted to the Medical Service so that admitted patients are placed on the appropriate medical wards.
