The incumbent responds to death scenes, performs preliminary examination of bodies, observes relevant aspects of the scene, documents findings (may also document findings photographically), including trauma. Identifies and establishes items of evidentiary value, coordinates with the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department by taking possession of evidence and safeguarding quality and maintaining chain of custody. Interviews witnesses in person and by telephone. Documents examinations/interviews in detailed reports, ensuring the maintenance of records. The incumbent makes determination of jurisdiction over deaths based upon investigation. May testify in court regarding procedures, examinations, investigations and/or evidence handling.
